OpenVAS in Backtrack

Using Backtrack you can try out OpenVAS on the Backtrack live CD.

OpenVAS and BackTrack 4

OpenVAS is part of the Backtrack 4 prefinal version.

After you download, boot Backtrack 4 prefinal, start the Backtrack GUI and do the following:

• Choose K -> Backtrack -> Vulnerability Identification -> OPENVAS -> OpenVas Make Cert (and follow the instructions)
• Choose K -> Backtrack -> Vulnerability Identification -> OPENVAS -> OpenVas Add User (and follow the instructions)
• Choose K -> Backtrack -> Vulnerability Identification -> OPENVAS -> OpenVas NVT Sync (optionally - if you have internet connection, download latest plugins)
• Choose K -> Backtrack -> Vulnerability Identification -> OPENVAS -> OpenVas Server (it will take some time)
• Choose K -> Backtrack -> Vulnerability Identification -> OPENVAS -> OpenVas Client (connect to OpenVAS server and start scanning)

Note that OpenVAS was not included in Backtrack 4 beta release.

OpenVAS and BackTrack 3

As OpenVAS is not in Backtrack 3 by default you can download the lzm module of OpenVAS stable (2.0.0):
openvas-2.0.0.lzm

If you don't have experience with adding additional lzm modules to Backtrack, read this.
Or you can download a remastered Backtrack3 ISO which includes the OpenVAS lzm (it still fits on 700 Mb CD):
bt3-openvas-2.0.0.iso

After you download, boot the remastered Backtrack3 cd, open a terminal and enter following:

• openvas-setup (this will setup openvas and run openvas-mkcert and add user)
• openvas-nvt-sync (optionally - if you have internet connection, download latest plugins)
• openvasd -D (run OpenVAS server, ignore the missing inc files warning, we're still building free replacements)
• OpenVAS-Client (run OpenVAS Client)

Other development or old modules (all compiled with debug symbols on):

• openvas-2.0.0-debug.lzm
• openvas-1.lzm
• openvas-1-debug.lzm - OpenVAS stable version with debug symbols (use it for bug reports)
• openvas-2.0.0.beta2.lzm - latest OpenVAS beta edition (2.0.0beta2) - help us test it!
• openvas-2.0.0.beta1.lzm - OpenVAS beta, previous beta release

How you can use lzm files with BackTrack official release?
Boot BackTrack, open terminal and say:
lzm2dir /path/to/openvas.lzm /
